Armies in East Africa front cover

ARMIES IN EAST AFRICA 1914–18 by Peter Abbott, illustrated by Raffaele Ruggeri. Osprey Men at Arms Series. The achievements of Paul von Lettow Vorbeck – the last German commander in the field to lay down his arms – brought him fame and respect comparable to that won by Rommel in World War II. Prisoners of the Red Desert book cover

PRISONERS OF THE RED DESERT by R. S. Gwatkin-Williams. The Adventures of the Crew of the Tara During the First World War. The steamer Tara and her crew spent the early part of WW1 patrolling the Northern Channel between England and Ireland before a transfer to coastal duties off Egypt and Libya. There she was torpedoed and sunk by a German U-Boat operating from a secret base on the Libyan coast. To ensure no intelligence of it's presence leaked to the British, the Germans towed the survivors—including this book’s author, the Tara’s captain, into captivity at the hands of the Senussi—religious zealots in league with the Ottoman Turkish forces. Then began a tortuous ordeal for the crew who suffered abuse, starvation and in some cases death at the hands of their gaolers. Abortive escape attempts across the relentless 'Red Desert' followed before rescue finally came in the form of a dramatic hunt and final assault by the forty armoured cars of the Duke of Westminster's squadron.

Italy

The White War front cover

THE WHITE WAR, Life and Death on the Italian Front 1915 – 1919 by Mark Thompson. Think of the worst conflicts of the first world war and you are unlikely to settle upon the 12 battles of the Isonzo, each covered in gory detail in this excellent history. As Thompson observes, "the ratio of blood shed to territory gained was even worse than the Western Front", because the proto-fascist General Luigi Cadorna forced wave upon wave of ill-equipped Italian peasants to advance along the Isonzo valley, only to be mown down by Austrian machine-guns. The Italian campaign ended in defeat, while the postwar settlement soured relations with the Allies sufficiently for the emergence of Mussolini. Softback. 456 pp. £9.99 – OUR PRICE £7.99
